Botulinum medicine (abbreviated to BoTox) has become trendy amongst up-to-date Sydney society and now it has become a grooming essential for individuals in Sydney.
But I never cease to be stunned when I listen to the various half-truths that surround this treatment.
Below are some of the errors that I encounter in my work as a physician at Star Cosmetic Medicine located in Pyrmont, Sydney.
Myth Number 1: I won’t have the ability to use my facial muscles normally!
The human face has approximately 60 muscles. These normally function harmoniously, however with time crow’s feet and fine lines may form. The overuse of BoTox can result in the muscles of the face looking less taut. Most doctors would use comparatively small doses to make you appear refreshed, but still you will maintain your facial expression.
Indeed a carefully measured amount of BoTox in the appropriate place means you can have a reduction in any fine lines and wrinkles without any reduction in facial expression.
Myth Number 2: BoTox is a poisonous substance!
This to a small extent is true. Its medical term is Botulinum Toxin Type A. Too great a dose can relax muscles that you do not want relaxed and even may cause illness.
Pharmacists have a famous expression that states ‘everything is a poison – it all depends on the dose’. A large amount of any medicinal drug will result in illness. Water can be fatal if enough is taken.
Myth Number 3: BoTox hurts!
The needles we use at Star Cosmetic Medicine have a diameter less than your hair. A lot of patients have stated that the treatments aren’t as painful as being bit by a bug. It for certain is not as sore as a procedure like a vaccination.

Myth Number 4: My face will be less sensitive!
This is totally untrue. BoTox acts on the neuromuscular junction, not sensate nerves. BoTox only targets the ability to relax muscles.
Myth Number 5. You can’t stop getting BoTox or else you will develop even worse wrinkles than earlier!
Once More this is simply false.
A set of injections lasts around three months. Any further treatments after the initial visit commonly last a few weeks longer. The lines will slowly return as the muscle recovers its normal function. Even So your lines will not be deeper than before the treatment commenced.
Even should you don’t have BoTox ever again – any wrinkles should be less pronounced than if you had not undergone the treatment. Primarily because you have allowed your skin to have a ‘wrinkle holiday’ for a few months.
