Mammoplasty, or breast augmentation, is one of the most-frequently performed procedures here at Premier Plastic Surgery. We invite you to call and schedule an initial consultation if you are considering breast augmentation surgery in the future. For now, here is some information regarding this procedure how it is performed, what to expect, and if you are a good candidate.
Why Breast augmentation?
Many women are not satisfied with the size and/or shape of their breasts. They may be too small to be in proportion to the rest of the figure; in rare cases, one may be noticeably smaller than the other. Breasts can also change over time due to pregnancy and particularly nursing, change in weight, and as a natural consequence of aging. Such a procedure may also be indicated for breast cancer survivors who have had breast tissue removed, resulting in an abnormal shape.
How Is It Done?
Mammoplasty is performed as an out-patient procedure under general anesthesia, and takes about two hours. The surgeon makes a small incision under the breast, around the areola or under the arm where scars will not be visible. The implant a plastic bag filled with a sterile saline solution is then inserted and the incisions sealed with dissolving sutures and bandaged.
Is It Painful?
All surgery involves some level of discomfort. In the case of breast augmentation, this is not overly-severe; your doctor can prescribe analgesic medication if needed.
Are There Side Effects?
Any invasive surgical procedure involves some degree of risk; however, these are minimal. You may notice some bruising during the first seven days, as well as some asymmetry between your breasts, or on either side of one breast. This is normal as the breasts settle into place; these issues usually disappear after 3-4 weeks.
How Long Is Recovery?
Full recovery usually takes about 3-4 weeks; however, most women in good health can resume normal activity by the end of the second week. You will be asked to come in for follow-up visits for at least three months following the surgery, however.
Is Mammoplasty Right For Me?
If you are a woman in good physical health and have a realistic psychological outlook (i.e., you’re considering this for your own benefit and simply to please your partner), you should be a good candidate for breast augmentation. A thorough health history and physical exam will ultimately determine whether or not such surgery is advisable in your case, however.
